Well, it could be argued that as hard as many might think CNN tried to get former President Donald Trump unelected, they actually may not have wanted to see it manifest. That is because in the post-Trump era, (at least for now) CNN (and other left-wing news outlets) ratings and clicks are plummetting at catastrophic rates.
It could be argued that all news channels are facing a “slower news” cycle. But even still, it causes one to “circle back”, as White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki would say, to the fact that at least for the next 3.5 years, Donald Trump is gone from the political limelight. It is almost like CNN loved to hate Mr. Trump, and now they have lost the yin to their yang.
What will they do now? Time will tell if they will have to revamp, rearrange, reconstruct, create a new “villain” to make people hate, or simply ride out the slow time that they are experiencing. Fox News reported that CNN averaged 2.5 million primetime viewers from November 4th to January 20th. That is the day after the 2020 presidential election until the day of the inauguration.
But once Joe Biden took office, CNN has only seen an average of 1.6 million viewers between January 21st, to March 15th. Fox News made it a point to point out that back in 2018, Ted Koppell mocked CNN reporter Brian Stelter, who is often the butt of many right-wing pundit’s jokes, saying that without Trump, his ratings would be in the toilet. Has that prediction come true? One could draw that conclusion in all fairness without being too far off the mark in our perspective.
Fox News also reported in part:
CNN’s viewership during the primetime hours of 8-11 p.m. ET dropped 36% since Biden took office after it spiked following Election Day. CNN’s primetime viewership decline was even sharper among the key demographic of adults age 25-to-54, plummeting 47% during the same period.
CNN’s viewership also suffered among the total day audience since Trump left office, leaving the liberal network without its bête noire.
CNN averaged 1.7 million viewers from Nov. 4 through Jan. 20, but it dropped to 1.1 million since Biden took office for a 34% fall. During the same period, CNN shed 44% of its total day viewers among the key demo, dropping from an average of 483,000 to only 272,000.
Popular Twitter feed Breaking 911 pointed out the news to their large fan base, saying:
“JUST IN: CNN has lost 47% of its primetime audience in the key 25-54 age demographic since Pres. Trump left office”

Even during the golden age of Trump ratings, CNN did have its ups and downs. There was the time former President Trump threatened to sue them. That was for alleged “misrepresentations to the public”, which we previously covered here. Then, there was the Nick Sandmann lawsuit that cost them an undisclosed but arguably extensive amount of money. This was after Sandmann was painted in a negative light for simply standing next to a Native American man with a MAGA hat on, arguably doing nothing wrong but standing his ground.
Then there was CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin, as featured in the cover image of the story smack dab in the center. This story that we also reported was actually a few days after the election of 2020 when many were still claiming that the election was contested in the eyes of Donald Trump’s supporters. Toobin was busted masturbating on a Zoom call that led to his eventual and embarrassing end at CNN.
Another issue CNN ran into was James O’Keefe of Project Veritas, who recorded an internal conference call, exposed Van Jones for saying off the record that the first Trump impeachment was potentially a “nothing burger”, and ticked off CNN head Jeff Zucker in many other ways as well.
Former President Trump also was constantly sparring with the network, which arguably spent most of their time criticizing all the bad things about his presidency and minimizing anything good in the eyes of Trump and his supporters. It’s unclear what the future holds, but one thing is for sure, we are in a new and unpredictable cycle for not only CNN, but all news channels, and anything could happen.
Wrapping up the report about CNN’s ratings:
CNN averaged 3.1 million primetime viewers from Dec. 28 through Jan 20, but it plummeted to 1.6 million from Inauguration Day to the present for a drop of 49%. When it comes to the key demo, CNN lost a staggering 58% of its viewers during the same time frames.
CNN also lost nearly half its viewers among the total day audience, too.
CNN averaged 2.2 million total day viewers from Dec. 28-Jan. 20, owed in part to viewers flocking to cable news for coverage of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and its aftermath. However, the network has since averaged only 1.1 million viewers for a significant 48% decline.
In addition to the declining viewership, CNN has been embarrassed by its handling of multiple scandals surrounding New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat.
Cuomo even had to opt-out of reporting about his brother the New York Governor at all, as rumors swirled about how Jake Tapper and others may have felt about the whole situation. We reported on that situation in part:
CNN News Host and prominent liberal Jake Tapper appears to be turning on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) following the sexual harassment allegations. One might even speculate it could be linked to a potential CNN bias against Chris Cuomo.
Tapper tweeted out an article headlined, “When straight news reporters asked the governor questions he’d rather not answer, he’d belittle them as beneath his intelligence or accuse them of being tools of a vast right-wing conspiracy.” This article referred to Andrew Cuomo.
Perhaps they will need to continue to come up with crazier and crazier ideas to keep their left-wing audience coming back for more, such as Don Lemon’s recent insinuation that perhaps coming to a universal conclusion that Jesus wasn’t White will help solve racism somehow. Other liberal news outlets have had to lay off people as well.
It was recently reported that 47 journalists were let go out of nowhere by Buzzfeed after they acquired HuffPo from Verizon, causing a Twitter meltdown, and many claiming they were in need of a new job on their blue check accounts.
