Cruz Turns Up the Heat By Calling for Investigation Into Twitter’s ‘Blatant and Willful’ Violations

Senator Ted Cruz sent a letter today to Bill Barr and the DOJ, as well as Steven Mnuchin and the Treasury Department, calling for a criminal investigation of Twitter over allegations the company is violating U.S. sanctions against Iran.

In the letter, he writes that they “should investigate what appears to be Twitter’s blatant and willful violation of IEEPA and E.O. 13876 by providing services to Khamenei, Zarif, and other designated Iranian entities, and, to the extent appropriate, enforce any violation through sanctions and by seeking civil and criminal penalties.”

From Axios:

“I believe that the primary goal of (the International Emergency Economic Powers Act) and sanctions law should be to change the behavior of designated individuals and regimes, not American companies,” Cruz wrote.”But when a company willfully and openly violates the law after receiving formal notice that it is unlawfully supporting designated individuals, the federal government should take action.”

In an interview on Fox Business, Cruz said about Twitter that “They believe they are kings of the universe.” He continued by saying that “Twitter has no business deciding which politicians they like and which they don’t, they should be a neutral forum.”

Cruz also retweeted a question by Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera who wondered if Twitter would be fact checking Joe Biden? His response was, “Of course not. They are biased & engaged in one-sided censorship.”

He believes they shouldn’t be fact-checking either candidate as he mentioned in the Fox Business interview. He said it ends up in a finger-pointing match ultimately and works itself out through the “political process.”
