Dem Sens Seethe After Joe Manchin Joins Republican Sens in a Majority Rejection of ‘Abortion Rights’ Bill

Democrats brought a bill to establish “abortion rights” to the senate floor today, known as the Women’s’ Health Protection Act.

Although it required 60 votes to pass, it was defeated by a simple majority as well at 51-49 as U.S. Sen Joe Manchin (D-WV) joined the 50 Republican Senators in voting against it.

Following the rejection of the bill, Democrat Senators seethed on Twitter, with many voicing their displeasure at the result.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) claimed, “Americans will not forget who voted to protect a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her body—who voted to protect abortion rights.”

“Today’s vote was just one step. We can’t allow this shameful backslide from MAGA Republicans. We will keep fighting for women’s rights,” Schumer insisted.

U.S. Sen Ron Wyden (D-OR) suggested that “Today’s vote is a gut punch to those who believe in liberty, privacy & equal rights. Now Americans know which side every Senator stands on.”

“The Senate cast its vote & now Americans must cast theirs & decide whether or not they want to be part of this dangerous Republican reality,” Wyden declared.

U.S. Sen Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) asserted, “No, the Senate bill codifying Roe did not pass, but tomorrow we get up and we fight again.”

“And in November, we take that fight right to the ballot box,” Klobuchar vowed.

Hillary Clinton’s 2016 running mate Tim Kaine (D-VA) even tweeted after the vote, “Today is the start, not the finish. We’re not going to give up. We’ll look for other ways to protect a woman’s right to choose.”
