House Republicans voted overwhelmingly tonight to retain Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) as their No. 3 leader, despite a reported 30 of them speaking out against her in a closed door meeting after she voted last month to impeach then-President Donald Trump.
The secret vote was reportedly 145-61 and appeared to catch some by surprise, despite the news that Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) continued to back her in for the role.
Democrats appeared to be the most ecstatic about the news, however, with many having said ahead of time that they were rooting for her.
Liberal Stacy Stateham tweeted, “I never thought I’d say this, but here it is. I’m awfully thankful that Liz Cheney is still in Republican leadership.”

Writer and outspoken anti-Trump writer Tony Posnanski said following the decision, “I hate rooting for Liz Cheney but whatever it’s 2021 and I hate Matt Gaetz.”

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), who also voted to impeach Trump, tweeted out his approval as well and said, “Great example: the loudest isn’t always the majority. Way to go Liz!” His replies were filled with Democrats applauding him for “taking a stand.”

Prior to the vote, it was also reported that Cheney refused to apologize for voting to impeach Trump. She claimed that it was her constitutional duty.
