With Pennsylvania electing a new governor and U.S. Senator in 2022, the state has become a focal point of the November elections.
Democrats got bad news yesterday, however, as the Commonwealth Court ruled that the state’s mail-in voting law was unconstitutional.
Republicans argue that the 2019 law allows any voter to vote by mail without providing a reason and contains a number of other provisions aimed at making it easier to cast a ballot.
Democratic Attorney General Josh Shapiro, who is also running for governor, wrote that the “opinion is based on twisted logic and faulty reasoning, and is wrong on the law. It will be immediately appealed and therefore won’t have any immediate impact on Pennsylvania’s upcoming elections.”
“More than 5M mail-in ballots have been cast by voters of both parties in the 4 elections since our bipartisan mail-in voting law was signed in 2019. More Republicans voted for this law than Democrats,” Shapiro added.
In 2020, however, seventy-five percent of Pennsylvania’s mail-in ballots went to Biden, while two-thirds of the in-person votes went to Trump.
When the law was written, it clearly was not expected that there would be such a split and it would appear that Democrats really took advantage of the new rules.
Trump applauded the court ruling and declared, “Big news out of Pennsylvania, great patriotic spirit is developing at a level that nobody thought possible. Make America Great Again!”
It appears that with Shapiro vowing to appeal the court ruling, it will ultimately end up in the state Supreme Court.
