After landing a new gig at little-known startup cable news startup NewsNation, former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo was interviewed by his soon-to-be colleague Dan Abrams for the first time since his CNN departure.
“I never lied and there were no secrets” Cuomo claimed during the interview, according to the New York Post.
Cuomo also told Abrams, “I don’t think I’ve ever been a victim of anything ever in my life. … I don’t feel sorry for myself.”
“You make choices. You make a choice to be in this business. You make a choice to be in that dynamic and to want to be relevant. And it’s not always going to be easy. It’s not always going to be fair,” Cuomo insisted.
As The Hill noted, CNN suspended and then fired Cuomo in December, parting ways with its top-rated prime-time anchor after he was found to have misled executives at the cable news giant about his contacts with aides to his brother Andrew Cuomo and journalists covering the sexual harassment scandal that led to the former New York governor’s resignation.
In addition, Cuomo said of his former colleagues Jake Tapper and Don Lemon, “They’re good people. They’re good people.”
“I cannot blame people for acting on what they’re told,” Cuomo continued, “Should they have called me? Of course. But I understand the circumstances, also.”
Cuomo added, “I understand why they may not have felt that was an option. But these are good people.”
According to insiders, Cuomo was hired for around $1 million per year at his new job, compared to the $6 million he was making at CNN.
Cuomo will be joining the network’s prime-time line-up this fall as the host of his own show.
