Elon Musk Embarrasses Poorly Prepared BBC Journalist Over Twitter Hate Speech Claim

Twitter CEO Elon Musk sat down with BBC reporter James Clayton to discuss Twitter and Musk’s venture of taking the social media giant private.

During the interview, Clayton claimed that “There’s been a rise in hateful content on Twitter.” Musk has taken the allegations seriously confronts Clayton over the claim and asks him to give a specific example of what he claims is on Twitter.

Musk: “Content you don’t like or hateful, describe a hateful thing?”

Clayton: “I mean you know just content that will illicit a reaction, something I mean something that is slightly racist or slightly sexist those kinds of things.”

Musk: “So you think if something is slightly sexist it should be banned.”

Clayton: “No, I’m not saying anything.”

Musk: “I’m curious, I’m trying to understand what you mean by hateful content. I’m asking for specific examples, and you just said that if something is slightly sexist that’s hateful content. Does that mean it should be banned?”

Clayton: “Well you’ve asked me whether my feed, whether it’s got less or more, yes it’s got slightly more.”

Musk: “I’m asking for examples. Can you name one example?”

Clayton: “Honestly I honestly.”

Musk: “Can you name a single example?”

Clayton: “I’ll tell you why. Because I don’t actually use that feed anymore because I don’t particularly like it. Actually, a lot of people are quite similar.”

Musk: “Wait a second, you said you’ve seen more hateful content, but you can’t name a single example, not even one.”

Clayton: “I’m not sure I used that feed for the last three or four weeks.”

Musk: “Then how did you see the hateful content?”

Clayton: “Because I’ve been using Twitter since you’ve taken over for the last six months.”

Musk: “Okay so then you must of at some point seen hateful content, I’m asking for one example. And you can’t give a single one.”

Clayton: “And I’m saying I’ve”

Musk: “They I’m saying you don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Clayton: “really!?”

Musk: “Yes, because you can’t give a single example of hateful content not even one tweet, and yet you’ve claimed the hateful content was high. That’s a false.”

Clayton: “No.”

Musk: “You just lied.”

Clayton: “No, what I claimed was there are many organizations that say that, that kind of information is on the rise, now weather it has on my feed.”

Musk: “Give me an example.”

See the exchange below:

Musk continued to push back on the claim Clayton had made, and when it was clear that no ground was being conceded the pair agreed to move on.

Musk made the point that people and organizations can make the claim that Twitter has had a rise in hateful content, but without examples, there is no merit to the claim.

It seems that owning Twitter has given leverage to the moderate right wing point of view as the jaws of censorship have been slightly loosened from the necks of patriots nationwide.

  1. I admit I have been slightly racist and slightly sexist, but have not tweeted that.
