White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre made an apparent false claim on Monday, May 2, 2023, when she said that illegal migration is down 90% under President Biden.
Jean-Pierre made the claim during a press briefing in response to a question about the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis.
“When it comes to illegal migration, you have seen it come down by more than 90%, and that’s because of the actions that this president has taken.” Jean-Pierre said.
However, Jean-Pierre’s claim is false. According to data from the Department of Homeland Security, illegal border crossings have increased significantly under President Biden.
Jean-Pierre’s claim is also contradicted by the Biden administration’s own data. In a report released in February 2023, the Department of Homeland Security acknowledged that the number of illegal border crossings had increased significantly under President Biden.
The report said that the number of illegal border crossings in fiscal year 2021 was the highest number of illegal border crossings in 20 years.
The report also said that the number of unaccompanied minors crossing the border illegally had increased by 250% in fiscal year 2021.
Jean-Pierre’s false claim about illegal immigration is just the latest example of the Biden administration’s dishonesty about the border crisis.
The Biden administration has repeatedly tried to downplay the severity of the border crisis, and it has repeatedly made false claims about the number of illegal border crossings.
The Biden administration’s dishonesty about the border crisis is unacceptable. The American people deserve to know the truth about the crisis, and they deserve to know that the Biden administration is doing everything it can to address it.
Twitter also fact checked KJP: “2022 had 2.76 million illegal border crossings, more than doubling the previous record. Migrant border crossings haven’t decreased. March 2023 saw a 25% increase in border crossings.”
It’s unclear where KJP got her numbers from or if there’s some way they twisted the data or completely made it up.
She may have been referencing a claim made by DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in January, “We’ve also seen a significant drop in the number of Cubans, Venezuelans, Nicuaraguans and Haitians arriving irregularly in between our ports of entry at the Southern border — nearly a 90% drop in those populations.”
And not a single reporter with the guts to challenge the little ignorant chocolate mop head to back up that with verifiable facts.
