Former Hillary Clinton Running Mate Sen Tim Kaine Stranded on I-95 For ’19 Hours’ Along With Hundreds of Motorists

Hundreds of drivers have been stranded on I-95 in northern Virginia for nearly a day as a tractor-trailer crash locked down brought traffic to a halt on the major north to south highway.

Former Hillary Clinton running mate U.S. Sen Tim Kaine was amongst those trapped on the highway as he tweeted out this morning about his predicament.

Kaine shared a picture of his view, which showed him surrounded by tractor-trailers, and reported, “I started my normal 2 hour drive to DC at 1pm yesterday. 19 hours later, I’m still not near the Capitol.”

“My office is in touch with @VaDOT to see how we can help other Virginians in this situation. Please stay safe everyone,” Kaine implored.

NBC News correspondent Josh Lederman also tweeted out about being stuck in the traffic jam about half an hour south Washington D.C. on Monday afternoon and as of around daybreak this morning, he still hadn’t budged.

Dave Dildine, a traffic reporter for WTOP said, “Some callers were sobbing and scared. Psychologically it is extremely distressing to be motionless on a highway for hours on end without knowing how much longer it will last.”

The paralysis was triggered by heavy snow and too many cars for road conditions to sustain, according to Dildine.

Dildine explained, “The heavy burst of snow Monday morning set off a chain reaction of truck crashes and stalled vehicles.”

“As traffic initially lurched to a stop, snow rapidly piled up between vehicles. With plows unable to reach the snow-covered mainline, more drivers began spinning their wheels and the severity of the bottlenecks continued to worsen,” Dildine asserted.

Many have concentrated their frustration on VDOT and spokeswoman Kelly Hannon said late Monday that crews are concentrating their efforts on clearing blocked trucks as well as treating road surfaces for several inches of snow and ice accumulation.

“We know this has been unprecedented and people have been stuck for prolonged periods and we remain at work through the night to get things moving again. We certainly understand and empathize with the distress that so many people are going through, and again, our whole mission is to keep traffic moving,” Hannon insisted.
