Dr. Mehmet Oz, who served as one of former President Donald Trump’s health advisers, is reportedly weighing a run for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.
Beginning in 2018, the Oz, 61, had served on the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition for a two-year term.
The report from the Washington Free Beacon stated that according to influential Republicans familiar with his plans, Oz has begun hiring staff and reaching out to potential allies.
It is unclear when Oz is planning an official announcement, according to the report, and a follow-up report, however, indicated that is staying “focused” on his show.
A spokesman said, “Since last year, Dr. Oz has lived and voted in Pennsylvania where he attended school and has deep family ties.”
“Dr. Oz has received encouragement to run for the U.S. Senate, but is currently focused on our show and has no announcement at this time,” the spokesman added.
Current GOP Senator Pat Toomey isn’t seeking re-election after serving in the Senate since 2011, but Sean Parnell currently is the lead Republican running, having previously been endorsed by Trump.
Parnell is a decorated Army veteran who served in Afghanistan and Democratic candidates include the Pennsylvania lieutenant governor, John Fetterman.
Oz faced scruntiny last year for some of the comments that he made on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show where he advocated for returning students to in-person learning.
