GA Dem Congresswoman Decries Rittenhouse Verdict, Calls For a Re-Examination of ‘Self-Defense Laws in Our Justice System’

U.S. House Rep Carolyn Bourdeaux (D-GA) issued a tweet decrying the verdict as Kyle Rittenhouse was found not guilty in his murder trial for the deadly shootings that occurred in Kenosha, Wisconsin on August 25, 2020.

Bourdeaux said in her tweet, “The acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse is an example of why the nation must re-examine self-defense laws in our justice system.”

“When you seek out violence wielding a dangerous weapon, there should be accountability for deadly results,” Bourdeaux continued.

Bourdeaux then brought race into the situation and concluded, “I hope this young man realizes that he was given a chance at life – one that we all know might not have been afforded to him if he had been Black – and dedicates himself to repairing the deep rifts in our community and in our country that he created.”

Kyle Rittenhouse faces 5 charges after the 6th and 7th charges were thrown out, which were for the alleged underage gun charge and alleged breaking curfew charge.

Rittenhouse was charged in the shootings that left 2 dead and one injured in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The charges against Rittenhouse left have come in as follows:

Count 1: First-Degree Reckless Homicide, Use of a Dangerous Weapon – not guilty.

Count 2: First-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Use of Dangerous Weapon – not guilty.

Count 3: First-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Use of a Dangerous Weapon – not guilty.

Count 4: First-Degree Intentional Homicide, Use of a Dangerous Weapon – not guilty.

Count 5: Attempted First-Degree Intentional Homicide, Use of a Dangerous Weapon – not guilty.
