U.S. House Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was declared eligible today for the ballot in her re-election bid today by a Georgia judge.
Ultimately, her fate will be decided by the Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who has been at odds with Donald Trump over his challenging of the Nov. 2020 election results.
Less than a month after a daylong hearing in April that included arguments from lawyers for the voters and for Greene, as well as extensive questioning of Greene herself, State Administrative Law Judge Charles Beaudrot announced his decision.
According to state law, Beaudrot must submit his findings to Raffensperger, who has to decide whether Greene should be removed from the ballot.
While Beaudrot’s decision is not binding on Raffensperger, who must determine if Green is qualified to run for re-election, it seems unlikely that he would overturn a judge’s ruling.
A group of voters had challenged Greene’s eligibility, alleging that she played a significant role in the Jan. 6, 2021 and that it put her in violation of a seldom-invoked part of the 14th Amendment having to do with insurrection which would make her ineligible to run for re-election.
The complaint was filed by Free Speech for People, a left-wing national election and campaign finance reform group, on behalf of five voters who live in Greene’s district.
As we previously reported, CNN’s Jim Acosta asked Greene a number of questions in regards to her testimony from the case less than a week after she took the stand:
U.S. House Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) brought the heat today to CNN’s Jim Acosta after he attempted to question her about a Jan. 6 text message.
Greene called Acosta a “liar” to his face ultimately after he asked her “Did you send a text asking the president to declare martial law?”
“You know what your problem is, you’re just another one of those liars on television,” Greene lectured.
After Greene asked him to read the text message, Acosta found the message on his phone and read it word for word.
Greene told him that the text did not say what he asked, although she didn’t recall if she sent it or not, and again called him a “liar.”
