A father in Germany has reportedly killed himself and his family over a fear of imprisonment because he forged a COVID-19 vaccination passport.
The 40-year-old father of four, Devid R., according to a suicide letter left behind, had forged a vaccination certificate for his wife, according to the Chief Public Prosecutor Gernot Bantleon.
Bantleon told the German Press Agency that after the employer found out, the couple was afraid of imprisonment and that the children would be taken away from them.
The investigators found the letter in the family home and Bantleon did not provide any further details.
It was reported in mid-November police in Germany arrested 12 people who were suspected of involvement in the manufacture and sale of falsified COVID-19 vaccine passports.
Vaccine passports are either shown as a QR code or in an official vaccine paper booklet and are required as evidence of vaccination in the country.
Germany also apparently has one of the highest rates of vaccine deniers who refuse to be vaccinated against the virus.
Chancellor Angela Merkel recently announced tighter restrictions on non-essential shops and services, such as cinemas and restaurants.
The restrictions come amid a dramatic fourth wave of the virus and state that those places will be restricted to vaccinated and recovered citizens in “an act of national solidarity,.”
