‘He Can Start by Making the House of Representatives Great Again’ Matt Gaetz Nominates Donald Trump for House Speaker After Previously Voting For Him in Two Rounds

U.S. House Rep Matt Gaetz (R-FL) today nominated former President and 2024 GOP Presidential candidate Donald Trump for House Speaker in the 11th round after previously voting for him in two rounds.

Gaetz had voted for Trump in the seventh and eighth rounds, before switching to U.S. House Rep Lauren Boebert’s (R-CO) nominee for both rounds, U.S. House Rep Kevin Hern (R-OK).

“And so I nominate President Trump because we make our country great again and he can start by making the House of Representatives great again,” Gaetz concluded his speech as Boebert stood up and clapped.

In a tweet prior to the nomination, Gaetz said, “There are only two outcomes here: Either Kevin McCarthy withdraws from the Speaker’s race, or he has to wake up every morning and put on the world’s best constructive straitjacket before the beginning of every House session.”

The nomination also came, after, as we reported, in a Truth Social post today Trump shared a comedic meme showing him in the Speaker chair during a Joe Biden State of the Union address.

The meme showed Biden speaking in front with Kamala Harris seated next to Trump, who was sticking his tongue out behind Biden.

Those who oppose McCarthy have dropped their nomination of U.S. House Rep Byron Donalds (R-FL) to become Speaker in the 11th round as well, although he has received multiple votes.

Hern was the only other nomination to be presented to the floor, this time by U.S. House Rep Bob Good (R-VA), who gave a passionate floor speech.
