Hispanic GOP Rep Responds Bluntly to Jill Biden: ‘No, We Are Not Tacos’

Earlier today, we reported that Jill Biden told a mostly Latino audience that they are as “unique” as “breakfast tacos” during a speech in San Antonio, Texas.

U.S. House Rep Carlos Gimenez (R-TX) shared a clip of Biden’s remarks in a tweet and quipped, “The First Lady thinks Hispanics are as unique as… breakfast tacos.”

“Maybe that’s true of ‘Latinx’ people, but for real Hispanics, that’s actually kind of insulting,” Gimenez added.

Gimenez later laid his feelings out more bluntly in a follow-up tweet.

“In case the White House needed a reminder: no, we are not tacos,” Gimenez declared.

Gimenez explained, “Hispanics aren’t a monolith. We are a very real, diverse people shaped by different histories, food, and even variance in language.”

“We have dreams and aspirations. We want an education, to work, and to get ahead,” Gimenez insisted.

According to the White House transcript, Biden declared during remarks delivered at the UnidosUS 2022 Annual Conference:

“Yes, the Latino community is unique. But what I’ve heard from you again and again is that you want what all families want. Good schools. Good jobs. Safe neighborhoods.”

“You want justice and equality—the opportunity to build a better life for your families.”

“It’s not only what all families want; it’s what all families deserve. But we can’t get those things on our own.”

“Raul helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community—as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami, and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio—is your strength.”
