House Republicans Pass Bill to Repeal Funding For the 87,000 IRS Agents in First Act of New Congress

House Republicans passed a bill tonight to repeal funding for the 87,000 IRS agents in the first act of the new Congress.

Per Axios, the bill that passed 221-210 along party lines targets the IRS funding boost in the Democrats’ “Inflation Reduction Act” passed last year.

Although the bill is unlikely to pass the Senate, Axios pointed out that its presence at the top of the House GOP agenda suggests that IRS funding could be a reoccurring sticking point in future budget clashes.

U.S. House Rep Bob Good (R-VA) celebrated the passage of the legislation in a tweet as he declared, “For the first time in 2 years, we passed legislation intended to help rather than hurt the country!”

“Thank you, America, for giving us the majority. May we validate the trust you placed in us!” Good added.

U.S. House Rep Lauren Boebert (R-CO) released a video prior to the vote in a tweet where she announced that they were, “Nixing the 87,000 IRS agents tonight and conservatives are just getting started!”

“It’s two pages, not thousands, it has one subject and zero earmarks. Oh, and it’ll help stop the harassment of the American citizens by prohibiting those 87,000 IRS agents from ever even being hired,” Boebert insisted in the video.

A December Moneywise op-ed wondered, “The IRS says its 87,000 new hires could help collect as much as $1 trillion by forcing rich tax cheats to pay up — but will more ‘fire-breathing dragons’ really do the trick?”
