Federal Judge Aileen Cannon has granted former President Trump’s request to appoint a “Special Master” to review the material taken from his Mar-a-Lago home in a raid conducted by the FBI last month.
This is a huge win for the former president. the judge wrote, “As a function of Plaintiff’s former position as President of the United States, the stigma associated with the subject seizure is a league of its own, A future indictment, based to any degree on property that ought to be returned, would result in reputation harm of a decidedly different order of magnitude.”
It appears the judge has more sense than the DOJ and FBI on how the public is absorbing the raid on a former president. This is likely to slow down the process for the DOJ and FBI.
Both Trump’s team and the DOJ will have until Friday to nominate their candidates.
According to CNN federal prosecutors are likely to appeal the decision as the DOJ has stated their “filter team” has already finished its review of the documents.
The judge said the “special master” will be reviewing, “seized property for personal items and documents and potentially privileged material subject to claims of attorney-client and/or executive privilege.”
Clearly, the DOJ isn’t happy with this outcome and we will see what will come next.
This doesn’t mean Donald Trump is ”out of the woods” but it does appear to shift the narrative his way for now.
