In a recent CNN report, one Tesla driver who is considering canceling a second order explained, “I don’t want Tesla cars to become the new MAGA hat.”
“I don’t want to be seen as a rich jerk, and I don’t want to be seen as a political conservative, libertarian free speech warrior,” the driver added.
For now, the driver said that he has kept his order and that it’s helped that Musk has, as CNN put it, seemed calmer on Twitter the past couple of weeks.
The network said that they conducted 12 interviews with recent car buyers and multiple drivers said they had ditched a Tesla product, abandoning deposits as high as $250, because of Musk’s recent behavior on Twitter.
CNN highlighted one liberal who said that he canceled an order for a Tesla solar roof this spring after seeing Musk announce his support of Republicans.
“If someone wants to spend money at Hobby Lobby, or Chick-fil-A or Tesla, they can do that. I have plenty of other options,” he claimed.
He also said that he’s ordering an electric vehicle from a Tesla competitor and while there are “plenty of other options,” according to Edmunds, the Tesla Model 3 is the top electric car still.
The same could be said about Chick-Fil-A, which was recently named America’s favorite restaurant for the 8th straight year, although people typically prefer variety in restaurants anyhow if they eat out more than once a week, for example.
CNN did share examples from those who were more enthusiastic now about purchasing a Tesla vehicle or unmoved by Musk’s politics.
