Jim Jordan Sends Follow-Up Letters to Biden Admin Officials Regarding ‘Left-Wing Violence Against Federal Property in Portland’

On March 29, U.S. House Rep and ranking member of the Judiciary Committee Jim Jordan (R-OH) wrote two letters to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, to push for answers for how they “protect federal property and federal personnel” in Portland, Oregon.

According to new letters written and sent by Jordan today, the Biden administration officials acknowledged receipt of the letters, but have yet to respond with the requested information.

In the new letters, Jordan details how “left-wing agitators have continued to vandalize and destroy federal property” in the city.

Jordan wrote in a tweet where he shared the letters, “Last week, rioters caused nearly $20,000 in damage to the Portland Boys and Girls Club.”

“The Biden Administration continues to ignore this violence. Americans deserve answers,” Jordan lamented.

Jordan concluded the letters by requesting their responses again, echoing the tweet and said that the Biden Administration must not condone continued “left-wing violence against federal property in Portland.”

March 29 article From KATU News:

In 2020, the city saw more than 100 consecutive days of protests, and many evolved into events where police declared riots or unlawful assemblies. Since then, there have been smaller events that have led to ongoing vandalism in the city. The fence outside some downtown buildings became huge focal points in the protests, and groups of protesters gathered there most nights.

Earlier this month, the fence surrounding the federal courthouse was taken down for about three days before it was re-installed after more weekend vandalism. This was one specific example Rep. Jordan cited in his letter:

In his letters, Rep. Jordan also noted that Portland Police has faced budget cuts in the last year. This comes as the bureau has reported in the past that they are also facing staffing shortages.

KATU News has reached out to the Oregon U.S. Attorney’s office for comment on the letters. They replied by saying, “we respectfully decline to comment.”
