Lately, House and Senate Republicans have been voting in different directions, even with leaders of GOP congress meeting to discuss the direction.
The Republicans don’t makeup enough of the house to stop any Democrat-led legislation, however, in the Senate Republicans have more power and are able to stop some legislation if they so choose. U.S. House Rep Jim Jordan (R-OH) told Politico, that any Senate Republicans who work with Democrats on Biden-backed legislation are “wrong. I wish they wouldn’t.”
Jordan then went on to praise House minority leader Kevin McCarthy by saying, “on the side of the American people”. He added that voters are against the recent bipartisan Senate legislation with, “look at all the pushback.” Many have questioned McCarthy’s loyalty to the conservative movement, however.
When Joe Biden took office last year, he said he wanted to reach across the aisle and work with Republicans on legislation, but this to many doesn’t seem to be the case.
Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell has recently opened the door to Democrats and worked to pass the CHIPS Act, which is set to provide $52 billion in subsidies and tax breaks to American chip manufacturers, in an effort to get them to build new factories in and bolster production domestically.
McCarthy on the other hand opposed the CHIPS Act bill.
Some like Senator Shelley Moore (R-WV) have a different point of view. Moore told Politico, “I wish [McCarthy] would take a deeper policy look at some of these issues that we’ve come together on, understanding they may want to make changes. Just unilaterally being against? I’d rather get things done, put it that way.”
With inflation still seemingly pushing higher, even with the economy in a recession at least by standard definition, some are concerned with the spending that the U.S. Congress keeps pushing through. At the same time, the Fed is raising rates.
Jordan’s sentiment is supported by many who are concerned with the economy, as well as the general direction of the country. Biden’s approval ratings are abominable, giving an indication that people aren’t happy with the direction he is leading us.
The midterm elections are quickly approaching, and there is speculation that Republicans could take back the House and possibly the senate. If Republicans do take back the house, there are rumors that Jordan could become the leader of the House GOP, that could be telling.
