Joe Manchin Joins Republicans to Tank Bill to Make Abortion Legal Until Birth

Democrats in the Senate attempted to do an end-around yesterday as they are concerned that abortion could be restricted or put in state hands by the conservative Supreme Court in the near future.

In a 46-48 vote, however, a Senate vote to invoke cloture on Roe v Wade codification fails.

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) was the only Dem to vote no on the bill that previously had passed the House.

The bill was not expected to have the necessary votes to pass the 50-50 Senate anyway, as legislation in the chamber requires Republicans to join Democrats to get at least 60 votes to break a filibuster.

Every Senate Democrat except Manchin and U.S. Sen Bob Casey (D-PA) cosponsored the legislation, although, Casey voted in favor of debate on the legislation.

Prior to the vote, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) explained, “Sadly it looks like the Supreme Court will limit abortion rights on the coming months. That’s why the bill is essential.”

LifeNews.com said of the news, “Joe Manchin was the only Democrat to vote against the Democrats’ bill to legalize abortions up to birth. Thank you @Sen_JoeManchin!”

NBC’s Sahil Kapur noted about the vote, “It leaves Congress with no viable path to keeping abortion legal nationally if SCOTUS guts Roe.”

Some furious left-wingers responded by suggesting that Manchin was no longer a Democrat.

One Twitter user with a large following declared, “Joe Manchin joined the GOP to block a bill that would guarantee access to abortion. Seriously, he is not a Democrat. It is time for everyone to say it out loud.”

“He is already acting as the 51st Republican regarding everything that matters for Biden’s agenda,” she insisted.

While Manchin had voted 100% with Biden for the first roughly 10 months of his term, he now has voted against Joe Biden three of the past five times.
