On Monday, ‘ReidOut’ host Joy Reid went after western media. In her two-and-a-half-minute rant, she highlighted the difference in coverage between the current humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and that of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
Then Reid lectures towards the end, “we don’t need to ask ourselves if the international response would be the same if Russia unleashed their horror on a country that wasn’t white and largely Christian, Because Russia has already done it, in Syria.”
Reid then concludes with, “There is a lot of soul-searching we need to do in Western media about why some wars, and lives, seem to matter more than others, and why some refugees get the welcome mat, while others get the wall.”

The major difference between Syria and Ukraine is that Russia was aiding its ally and leader of Syria, President Bashar al-Assad during the civil war. According to the Pentagon, Putin is now asking Syrian mercenaries to help with the conflict in Ukraine.
The current leader of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was voted into office in 2019, five years after the ‘Revolution of Dignity’, which ousted Russia-friendly President Viktor Yanukovych. Russia has invaded Ukraine and was not invited by its current President.
Zelenskyy has looked to the west since taking office and pursued relations with the EU and Nato, which has seemingly put Russia on high alert. Almost two weeks ago Russia began its invasion of Ukraine, which is part of eastern Europe. Many of the images shown by the media are of women and children. This conflict is very fresh in everyone’s mind because it is so recent.
Ukraine also borders NATO nations, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. While Syria only borders one NATO nation, Turkey. Turkey is separated from the rest of NATO by different bodies of water and has a small border with Greece and Bulgaria.
The United States has been a member of NATO since 1949 and was one of the twelve founding members.
At the heart of NATO is article five which is an agreement that binds the countries in an alliance to a commitment to protect each other. This factor increases the direct effect on America and all the other members of NATO. An attack against one nation is considered an attack against all. Even though Ukraine is not a member state of NATO its location directly affects NATO nations.
War is horrible and it is devastating everywhere that it takes place. Reid is ignoring the political and direct military agreements we have and only highlighting the skin color of those being affected by this conflict.
