Today, Wisconsin Judge Bruce Schroeder approved the destruction of the AR-15 used by Kyle Rittenhouse in the Kenosha self-defense killings and wounding that occurred last year during the Black Lives Matter riots.
Assistant District Attorney Thomas Binger set an April timetable for the destruction of the gun by the state crime lab.
Rittenhouse, who was not in court for Friday’s hearing, had previously had his attorney, Mark Richards, file a motion on Jan. 19 asking prosecutors to return his rifle, his ammunition, his face mask, and other clothing he was wearing on the night of the shooting to him.
Richards and David Hancock, a spokesman for Rittenhouse, said last week that he wanted to destroy the rifle and throw the rest of the items away so nothing can be used as a political symbol or trophy celebrating the shootings.
After the hearing, Richards told reporters, “We didn’t think anyone should profit from it.” and when asked if anyone had reached out about purchasing the gun, Richards responded, “Lots of people” but he didn’t elaborate.
Binger told Schroeder that destruction of the gun will be recorded as part of the agreement that was approved today and the rest of Rittenhouse’s property has already been returned to him.
Many liberals on Twitter apparently didn’t read the story and claimed that it was a win for the gun to be destroyed, not realizing that he wanted it done.
The mainstream media had also framed previous stories that he wanted the gun back but left out the part about him wanting it destroyed.
