Julia Letlow Projected Winner in Louisiana U.S. House Runoff After Boost From Trump

Tonight, NBC News has projected that Republican Julia Letlow has won a special election Saturday in a Louisiana 5th U.S. House District runoff election.

Letlow was favored to win and she managed to avoid a runoff election by surpassing the 50 percent threshold after a boost from former President Trump.

Trump, who first endorsed Letlow earlier this month, released a statement Saturday afternoon through his PAC where he said “Julia Letlow is outstanding and so necessary to help save our Second Amendment, at the Border, and for our Military and Vets. Louisiana, get out and vote today—she will never disappoint!”

Luke Letlow, Julia’s late husband, as first elected to the seat in November, but died of complications from Covid-19 in December.

“I am running to continue the mission Luke started — to stand up for our Christian values, to fight for our rural agricultural communities and to deliver real results to move our state forward,” Letlow said in a statement in January when she announced her campaign.

Letlow was also endorsed by Trump’s former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, who is also running for governor of Arkansas.

Sanders said in her endorsement, “As a fellow mom of young kids, I know Julia Letlow can handle anything Congress throws her way.”

“We need principled, strong leaders fighting for our values in Washington and I have no doubt Julia will be a conservative voice making a difference for our children’s future,” Sanders added.

In a tweet, Letlow thanked Sanders and said she was “truly honored” to have her support.

Following news of the projected victory, U.S. House Rep Lauren Boebert (R-CO) tweeted, “Congratulations @JBLetlow on your massive victory tonight and on becoming the first woman to represent Louisiana’s 5th district in Congress. This makes 18 new GOP women in our 117th Congress! Amazing!”
