Kamala Harris Has a ‘Strong Shot’ At the Record For Breaking the Most Tie Votes in the Senate, Currently Ranks 3rd on All-Time List

Kamala Harris has a “strong shot” at the record for breaking the most tie votes in the Senate and currently ranks 3rd on the all-time list, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Harris has broken 23 tie votes since taking office and the only vice presidents who have broken more ties are John Adams, with 29, and John C. Calhoun, with 31.

Both Adams and Calhoun served two terms in the 18th and early 19th centuries, respectively, when the Senate was less than half its current size.

It should be noted, however, that Harris’ tiebreaking role is unusual in the modern era, as the Senate is rarely tied 50-50 for long periods.

The last time the Senate was tied was in 2001 and it was only for less than six months with Dick Cheney serving as vice president.

It would seem that with slim margins in general, however, there would have been more tie-breaking votes at times, but that has not been the case.

The majority of Harris’ tiebreaking votes have been to unclog procedural gridlock over nominations, rather than to pass any substantive legislation.

A clip of Harris today that has gone viral shows her saying, “So, we’re working on bringing down—basically—the cost of what life requires for people.”

Breitbart’s Wendell Husebo pointed out in response to the clip that according to a Monmouth poll released today, “A majority of 57% say that the actions of the federal government over the past six months have hurt their family when it comes to their most important concern.”
