It was reported yesterday that more than 800,000 noncitizens and “Dreamers” in New York City could vote in municipal elections as early as next year.
The change comes after newly-elected Mayor Eric Adams allowed legislation to automatically become law, although opponents have vowed to challenge the new law, which the City Council approved a month ago.
New York City is the first major U.S. city to grant widespread municipal voting rights to noncitizens, barring a judge halting its implementation.
More than a dozen communities in Democrat-led strongholds across the U.S. already allow noncitizens to cast ballots in local elections, including 11 towns in Maryland and two in Vermont.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Chicago also allows non-citizens to vote in local school council elections.
U.S. House Rep Lauren Boebert (R-CO) weighed in on the news and asserted that if Democrats have their way, the possibility could spread to federal races, or in the state elections that pick the governor, judges, and legislators.
Boebert suggested, “Democrats want 7,000,000,000 people to be able to elect the US President. They want zero boundaries and zero rules.”
“New York City has now even made it legal for non-citizens to vote in elections. No one except for living US citizens should be voting in US elections,” Boebert insisted.

In a follow-up tweet, Boebert took aim at potential new voting legislation at the federal level and declared, “When Democrats say ‘voting rights’ they mean allowing non-citizens, criminals, the dead, and multiple votes per person in all elections.”

Former City Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez led the charge to win approval and he claimed, “We build a stronger democracy when we include the voices of immigrants.”
Adams has appointed Rodriguez as his transportation commissioner and he thanked the mayor for his support while expecting a vigorous defense against any legal challenges.
