The Senate voted today 70-30 to confirm President Joe Biden’s nomination of Merrick Garland for attorney general, meaning that 20 Republicans joined the Democrats, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) was able to block the confirmation last week, but ultimately, unable to stop it from happening after the it was advanced to a vote yesterday.
Cotton said that he believed Garland “had refused to answer basic questions” and that “During his hearing, Judge Garland said he thinks the death penalty is unfairly applied.”
“I asked him for examples, and he said he is not familiar with the specific circumstances of the murderers on federal death row (including Dylann Roof and the Boston Bomber),” Cotton explained.
Liberals on Twitter speculated that the confirmation could lead to a crackdown on former President Trump supporters who protested and may have entered the U.S. Capitol on January 6th or engaged in other behaviors as well as the elected officials who supported Trump’s refusal to concede.
Writer Steven Beschloss said, “In the coming weeks and months, there may be a lot of insurrectionist Republicans who wish Mitch McConnell hadn’t denied Merrick Garland a chance to serve on the Supreme Court.”
Twitter user Eric Foltz responded, “Just learned yesterday that any DOJ investigation of a member of Congress has to be signed off on by the AG. Once Garland is sworn in, things should really heat up on the 1/6 investigations.”

Once Garland is sworn in, things should really heat up on the 1/6 investigations.
Anti-Trump Author Howard Altman said that he “saw nazis march through VA screaming ‘Jews will not replace us,'” and “saw them storm the Capitol with shirts ‘6M was Not Enough.'”
Altman then claimed that he saw his government “applaud them.”
“Today we get #MerrickGarland, a man whose family fled anti-Semitic persecution as AG. Today, we tell nazis “no more,” Atlman believes.

Progressive activist Steve Rustad tweeted pictures of U.S. House Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), and U.S. House Rep Jim Jordan (R-OH) and asked, “Why are these MAGA traitors still in Congress???”
Rustad then demanded, “Expel them all. NOW. #MerrickGarland.”

It is clear that Democrat supporters want to consolidate power and use the Attorney General’s office to do so. Whether he makes the moves that they expect or not remains to be seen.
