Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance was supposed to be winding down his investigation of the Trump organization, prior to being replaced after 12 years in office.
Instead, Vance has now convened a second special grand jury, leaving many to wonder why, as the new six-month special grand jury allows the case to continue beyond his tenure if needed.
Vance leaves office in early January, when Manhattan’s first black District Attorney-elect Alvin Bragg takes office.
In June, the expiring grand jury returned an indictment against the Trump Organization and its long-serving chief financial officer Allan Weisselberg.
Both the Trump Organization and Weisselberg have pleaded not guilty and former President Donald Trump called Weisselberg a “tremendous” man and called the indictment a “disgrace” and “shameful.”
Former Watergate prosecutor Jill Wine-Banks recently told MSNBC that it might be taking longer due to the backlog of criminal cases due to COVID.
Wine-Banks noted that the assistant DA’s are doing much of the work so it would not be any issue that there is a new DA.
According to the Associated Press, Bragg said as much in an interview prior to the election when he explained that ss a top deputy to New York’s attorney general in 2018, Bragg helped oversee a lawsuit that led to the closure of Trump’s charitable foundation over allegations that he used the nonprofit to further his political and business interests.
Bragg told The AP his prior experience handling mortgage fraud, money laundering and other white-collar investigations made him feel “very equipped to follow the facts wherever they go in the Trump criminal probe.
“I remember the moment sitting around the table with the attorney general deciding to file the case and the ultimate question was, ‘is this a matter that we would file if it were someone else and we arrived with the answer that yes, this was the kind of conduct that was worthy of an attorney general action. It’s that same philosophy and approach that I’ll take to the D.A.’s office,” Bragg claimed.
Left-wing Occupy Democrats celebrated Bragg’s electoral victory in a tweet where they announced, “In a MAJOR loss for Trump, Alvin Bragg crushes his Trumper opponent, becoming Manhattan’s first Black District Attorney ever. Bragg will now head the city’s high-profile criminal fraud investigation into the Trump Organization. RT IF YOU THINK THAT THIS IS GREAT NEWS!”
