Marilyn Mosby, Baltimore, MD’s State Attorney Loses Democratic Primary amid Indictment

Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby is now in her final year, as this morning she conceded to Ivan Bates, who challenged her in the Democrat primary.

She shared her loss on Twitter:

“This morning I called Ivan Bates to congratulate him on his victory in the Democratic primary for Baltimore City State’s Attorney. My office is completely prepared to facilitate a smooth and orderly transition to the new administration.”

“I am grateful to my family and my colleagues in the State’s Attorney’s office for their commitment to our city and all their hard work on behalf of the citizens of Baltimore. We have so much to be proud of and I am forever indebted to so many for their love, support, and….”

“partnership over these past eight years. The opportunity to serve this city and the strong resilient people of Baltimore is the greatest blessing of my life and I am forever appreciative.”

Mosby gained public notoriety while trying the case of Freddie Gray who died in police custody.

Mosby also was among the many state prosecutors who directed their offices to stop prosecuting offenses such as drug possession, prostitution, and urinating in public, as well as others allegedly to stop the Coronavirs from spreading in jails and prisons.

Mosby was indited this January and is facing perjury and false mortgage application charges related to the purchase of two vacation properties.

Mosby allegedly lied on mortgage applications when applying for two vacation homes in Florida. Along with making false statements on the mortgage applications she also filed a 457(b) Coronavirus-related distribution request.

She did this by signing that she had experienced adverse financial consequences from the Corona virus as a result of “being quarantined, furloughed, or laid off; having reduced work hours; being unable to work due to lack of childcare; or the closing or reduction of hours of a business she owned or operated” on the mortgage application.

Duirng the time period cited, Mosby received her full gross salary of “$247,955.58 from January 1, 2020, through December 29, 2020, in bi-weekly gross pay direct deposits of $9,183.54.” According to a press release from justice.gov.

Mosby’s attorney, A. Scott Bolden, told Fox 45:

“Marilyn Mosby is innocent, has been innocent, and we look forward to defending her in the court of law, and presenting evidence of her innocence to a jury of her peers. We will fight these charges vigorously, and I remain confident that once all the evidence is presented, that she will prevail against these bogus charges—charges that are rooted in personal, political and racial animus five months from her election,” Bolden said.

It is unclear if Mosby’s policies during Covid or possibly her indictment are what tipped the scales against her. However, for now, Mosby is on her last stint as Baltimore City’s State Attorney.
