Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) spoke on the Senate floor today and explicitly placed blame for the Jan. 6 siege on the Capitol on President Trump, claiming that he provoked “the mob.”
“The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people,” McConnell said.
Later, in a tweet, McConnell touted the security of tomorrow’s inauguration, as National Guard members from around the country have locked down Washington D.C. at the behest of leaders.
“Tomorrow a new POTUS and VPOTUS will be sworn in. It will be secure because many other brave Americans have sworn their own oaths to support and defend our Constitution,” McConnell said.
McConnell added, “Thanks to the Capitol Police and all the federal & local personnel helping protect our democracy this week.”

Thanks to the Capitol Police and all the federal & local personnel helping protect our democracy this week.
Supporters of the president descended on the tweet, with McConnell being ratioed, meaning he has more comments than likes.
Popular twitter parody account “Catturd” referenced the ratio and said, “Ratio of the year coming for this snake.”

McConnell has not said whether he will vote to convict the president if a trial ever takes place in the Senate after impeachment proceedings were approved in the House, but his words today certainly make that appear to be a possibility.
