A known gang member charged with first-degree murder was released on his own recognizance, and many are outraged at this.
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said, “It is outrageous that a person charged with first-degree murder is so easily released from jail. This is yet another example of the revolving door at 201 Poplar which puts us all at risk by releasing violent criminals back in the community and sends a signal to other offenders that there is little consequence to their violent actions.”
District Attorney Steve Mulroy shared, “The DA’s office is aware of the inquiries surrounding the case of Gary Taylor, who is charged with first-degree murder and was recently released on his own recognizance.”
He added, “The DA’s office played no role in the decision to release Mr. Taylor pending trial. However, we are monitoring the situation.”
At first, reports showed that Taylor was released on his own recognizance now they have been updated to show that it was in error.
In court, on Tuesday the judge stated that Gary Taylor had been released in error and was not supposed to be released on his own recognizance, no other information was provided.
Police have a witness who told them they saw Taylor shoot the victim, this same witness is not named in the affidavit to protect them from Taylor.
The shooting took place on December 21st in a vacant lot at 660 Avenue in Memphis. The victim was Markeith Taylor and a witness positively identified Gary Taylor as the shooter.
Taylor whose nickname is “Lil Gary” was arrested ten days after the shooting but was released the next day on his own recognizance as the Pretrial Services Bail Setting Form showed no bail.
Mayor Taylor said, “This revolving door is like catch and release, a fisherman often does that. They’ll catch and release. Police are catching the criminals and the courts are letting them go. That has to end.”
At this time it doesn’t appear there is any more information on the error that took place to release the alleged murderer with no bond.
