Recent polls show the U.S. Senate contest between Minnesota Democratic Senator Tina Smith and Republican former U.S. Congressman Jason Lewis is within the margin of error, with Smith holding a slim 3% lead with 7% undecided.
Smith referenced the recent vacancy on the Supreme Court yesterday in a tweet, saying “I’m the only Senator to have worked at Planned Parenthood. I’ve seen first-hand how far Republican attacks on reproductive rights will go. If they get this SCOTUS seat, they WILL work to overturn Roe v. Wade.”
Lewis responded the Senator’s tweet, slamming her for invoking her past experience at an abortion clinic. “Senator Tina Smith made a career & fortune taking the lives of the unborn & she’s wearing it as a badge of honor. It’s disgraceful,” he said.
“She also said on the Senate floor that providing medical treatment to a newborn who survives a botched abortion attempt would be ‘inappropriate,'” he added.

In January 2018, Smith was nominated by then-governor Mark Dayton to fill the seat left open when Senator Al Franken resigned and she easily beat her Republican opponent State Senator Karin Housley 10 months later by more than 10 points.
She has to run again though because 2020 is the year Franken’s term would have expired. Smith said about the close race, “Minnesota is the land of close elections, we specialize in elections that are right down to the wire so I don’t think it is that surprising and I think its really going to be all about who turns out.”
