Supreme Court Justice Clarance Thomas, was sworn into office 31 years ago on the 15th of October 1991. MSNBC’s Tiffany Cross decided to mark the occasion by railing against the Justice and his wife. Cross introduced the segment by referring to Thomas as “justice pubic hair on my coke can.”
The reference was to testimony given by Anita Hill. Hill accused Thomas of being inappropriate, trying to date her, and talking to her about porn and sexual things. In her testimony, Hill says, “getting up from a work table, going to his desk, looking at this can and saying, who put pubic hair on my Coke?”
Hill testified in front of the Senate during Thomas’s confirmation hearings, making a mockery of Thomas in a similar way that was more recently done to Justice Brett Kavanah.
Cross also refers to Thomas as an “Uncle Tom” in the same opening line, “Clarence Thomas, on this very day in 1991, Justice Pubic Hair on My Coke Can was confirmed to the Supreme Court, and even though we collectively knew how bad it was then, we didn’t know just how problematic Tom would be until now.”
An Uncle Tom is meant to be offensive, it is a reference to a black man who is regarded as betraying cultural or social allegiance.
Her name-calling didn’t stop there. She then stated that Thomas had benefited from affirmative action early in his career. “For example, after benefiting from affirmative action, he was one of the 12 Black students entering Yale Law School in 1971, Justice Clayton Bigsby later firmly opposed it.”
Referring to Thomas as “Justice Clayton Bigsby” a character created by comedian Dave Chappelle. The character is a “Black White supremacist”.
She then slammed Thomas for his stance against abortion rights calling him “Commander Waterford” a character from “The Handmaid’s Tale” who is part of an authoritarian government. She said, “And of course, there is Commander Waterford’s staunch stance against abortion rights.”
She then went after Thomas’s Wife Virginia “Ginni” Thomas with, “There are many, many problems with Thomas, but the biggest? His insurrectionist-sympathizing, Jordan Peel ‘Get Out’-inspired wife.”
Cross is upset that she won’t get to see Ginni’s testimony to the January 6th Committee saying, “Sadly we won’t get to see the Real Housewives of Insurrection’s testimony before the January 6th committee, because they reportedly reached an agreement with her to not videotape.”
This rhetoric is only tolerated because it is coming from the left. Cross may think she is funny with all of her pop cultural references, she only comes off as bitter. Disappointed that abortion rights are now in the hands of each state and that a conservative black man has served more than three decades on the Supreme Court and doesn’t share her viewpoints.
