In an in-person roll call vote, President Trump was officially renominated to represent the Republican party on the ballot in the Nov. 3 presidential election. Trump showed up for a “surprise” speech given to the delegates and those in attendance.
At one point in the speech, he told supporters, “What it means is they are trying to steal the election from the Republicans, that’s what it means. Just like they did it last time with spying, and we caught them. And that included President Obama.”
A man then shouted what appeared to be “spygate.” Trump paused and said, “Let’s be nice, spygate, this could only happen in North Carolina.” He finished by saying “and that included them and they got caught.” Someone, also yelled “drain the swamp” at that point.

The Raw Story claimed that the President acknowledged what he said was “a slur” and then they gave examples of Twitter users who thought he said “monkey.”
The Lincoln Project released a tweet calling it “disgusting” and asking if North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis approved. They later deleted the tweet when it became clear that wasn’t what was said.

Former managing editor of Occupy Democrats Brian Tyler Cohen also did the release a tweet and then delete action but he tweeted again with a screenshot of the original tweet.
He said that he “Deleted this tweet, where a crowd member yells what sounds like “monkey” or “spygate” after Trump mentions Obama. Trump stops and says, “Be nice,” before grinning and saying, “Only in North Carolina,” which would be an odd reaction to “spygate.” Still, not 100% sure so I deleted.”

Other tweets are still up claiming that the audience member said “monkey.”

Hey, anyone @gop? Can you devise a defense for (a) the guy who shouted "Monkey!" at Trump's mention of Obama or (b) Trump's "Oooh, naughty!" response? Standing by.
