Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis’ constituents are beginning to see the fruit of their leader’s recent actions already. Recently, a state attorney who went on the record to say that he would not enforce certain things was removed from his post by DeSantis.
He has vowed to fight back through all legal means while Democrat voters around the nation are furious. Meanwhile, however, a new state attorney is back to dropping the proverbial hammer so to speak, to actually enforce current laws on the books that are routinely enforced in most areas anyway.
Susan Lopez was appointed as state attorney for the Tampa area after Andrew Warren was given the boot. The Tampa Bay Times is doing what may see as playing the “race card”. AP reported in part:
The Tampa Bay Times reports that local leaders and experts fear that the change will disproportionately affect people of color and the poor.
They’re often “crimes of poverty,” said Melba Pearson, of the Center for Administrative Justice at Florida International University.
Crimes included are suspended licenses, disorderly conduct, and other low-level misdemeanors reportedly.
Lopez issued a statement, however, making it clear that it wasn’t some sort of vengeance tour. She appears to want to use discretion still, but also go back to what many feel is normal precedent, rather than letting huge swaths of crimes go unabated. From AP:
Lopez said in a statement last week that her office “will evaluate every case law enforcement sends us and make a decision about whether to prosecute. Some cases will go forward. Some will not.”
