Non-binary Top Nuclear Waste Official Sam Brinton No Longer an Employee of the DOE After Multiple Luggage Theft Accusations

It was reported tonight that non-binary top nuclear waste official Sam Brinton is no longer an employee of the Department of Energy after multiple luggage theft accusations.

Multiple Republican officials had called for Brinton’s removal after it was reported that they had stolen luggage from a second airport.

A department spokesperson said in an email that “Sam Brinton is no longer a DOE employee. By law, the Department of Energy cannot comment further on personnel matter.”

It is unclear whether Brinton was fired or if they had resigned, but prior to today’s update, they were reportedly on leave from their position.

A previous letter from 15 Republican lawmakers to DOE Secretary Jennifer Granholm said, “We demand the resignation of Sam Brinton, and we implore you to set aside petty politics and appoint only the most qualified and dedicated individuals to influence America’s energy sector.”

“As an appointed official, Sam Brinton represents both your Department and the United States. It is simply not possible for an individual to represent American values and simultaneously violate the felony laws of the land,” the letter read.

Brinton was the deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition at the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy.

The DOE has updated its website to show that the position is now vacant, and Brinton’s webpage was scrubbed from the site.
