Wednesday, Brandon and Stephanie Miller an Ohio couple was sentenced for taking part in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The couple had live-streamed entering the Capitol on Facebook.
Obama appointed Judge Tanya Chutkan sentenced both of them to time behind bars. This went beyond what the Department of Justice had asked for punishment. The DOJ has requested that the millers be sentenced to home confinement as part of a 36-month probationary period.
Ryan J Reilly tweeted the judge’s explanation of her sentence for the couple.
“BREAKING: Judge Tanya Chutkan sentences Brandon Miller to 20 days behind bars. Stephanie Miller gets 14 days incarceration. DOJ had asked for home confinement. “They climbed through a broken window,” Chutkan emphasizes. “I’m not sure there’s any remorse.” “There have to be consequences for participating in an attempted violent overthrow of the government beyond sitting at home,” Judge Tanya Chutkan previously said.”

The tweets continue, “Judge Chutkan said Brandon Miller came to D.C. to “help a political faction,” not to “help the country.” Judge Chutkan today: The country is watching. There have to be consequences for participating in an attempt to overthrow the government. As she normally does, Judge Chutkan tells the Millers they are not the worst thing they’ve ever done. She tells them to show their child that people can lead productive lives after making mistakes. Judge Chutkan: “This was not sightseeing, a protest gone awry. This was a call to arms by individuals who felt that because their party lost the election, they were not prepared to accept the results.”

Even though this went beyond what the DOJ recommended some on Twitter believe they still got off easy.
Anne McCarthy shared her feelings, “I’m not sure these short jail terms are enough of a “consequence.” and Country Over party piled on, “They are not. Minimum should be 5 years. Add violence or planning 10-15”

Twitter user tom hynes shared, “He pled guilty to one misdemeanor “parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.” Should we be consistent and have 45 day jail terms for everyone convited of that crime?”

It appears that the judge going beyond the requested sentence isn’t enough for some liberals who want to see the couple serve years not day behind bars.
