Rochester police Chief La’Ron Singletary will be retiring from the force, his last day will be September 29th. “As a man of integrity, I will not sit idly by while outside entities attempt to destroy my character. The members of the Rochester Police Department and the Greater Rochester Community know my reputation and know what I stand for.” Singletary said in a statement. He along with the rest of the command staff will be retiring.

This move wasn’t expected by the Mayor, those who chose to leave their positions gave no indication before today that was their plan to retire from their positions. Protests have plagued the city of Rochester since last week. Body camera video was released that showed an encounter with Rochester police. The man in the video died a week after the encounter.
The first night of protesting included trashing restaurants and screaming at the patrons of the restaurants. There have been subsequent nights of protesting as well. The Monday evening protest ended with the police deeming it an unlawful assembly.

The mayor gave a brief press conference on the announcement ending it with, “this just occurred, and honestly, I do not have the answers today.”
The local Black Lives Matter group, Free The People Roc, celebrated the news of the Chief’s resignation on a post on Facebook and made it clear they will be keeping the pressure on the city aiming to get the Mayor to resign.
The command staff’s retirements do not signal an end to any of this. Protests continue to go on across the country. As we reported earlier some are pushing anti-racism into the classrooms. Placating to them doesn’t seem to quench their thirst and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight to any of this.
