Romney Shuts Down ‘Liberal Friends’: Liberal Court is ‘Not Written in the Stars’

Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney, who has been against President Trump but maintains that he still represents conservative principles, today issued a statement regarding what he intends to do with a potential vote for the Supreme Court vacancy.

He also did an interview after the statement was released where he said, “My liberal friends over many decades have gotten very used to the idea of having a liberal court and that’s not written in the stars. I know a lot of people are saying, gosh we don’t want that change, I understand the energy associated with that perspective.”

Romney continued, “It’s also appropriate for a nation which is center-right to have a court which reflects center-right points of view, which is again, not changing the law from what it states, but following the law, following the constitution.”

In the statement, Romney pushed back on the idea that the seat shouldn’t be filled before the election. The Constitution gives the President the power to nominate and the Senate the authority to provide advice and consent on Supreme Court nominees.”

“Accordingly, I intend to follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the President’s nominee. If the nominee reaches the Senate floor, I intend to vote based upon their qualifications,” he added.

In March, a Gallup poll was released that showed, “More Americans approve of the job congressional Republicans are doing than of congressional Democrats’ performance — 40% vs. 35%.”

Romney however, received more favorability from the Democrats than Republicans at that point while President Trump was sitting near the highs of his approval ratings, including with Republicans.

If he does vote to confirm a conservative judge, that will likely help get him back in the good graces of some within his own party, but Democrats are likely to turn their backs on him quickly.
