Well, the proposed bill isn’t actually called reparations, but that’s what it’s beginning to sound like. Chuck Schumer and the Dems are trying to ram a package into the budget that is going to put the Republicans on pins and needles. On the one hand, it’s almost sure to fail in the Republican-controlled Senate.
On the other hand, It’s clear that Schumer’s theatrics involve a plan where just that happens. That would lay the groundwork for Democrats who are stoking racial divisions to say that President Trump, Senate Majority Leader McConnell (R-KY), and the other Republicans are either ‘racist’ or don’t care about the aforementioned communities if they don’t agree with the bill.
Whether or not that’s actually true won’t matter, because too often these days politics turn into theatre. According to CNBC: Senate Democrats on Thursday unveiled a proposal to infuse $350 billion in immediate and long-term investments into communities of color to help offset racial inequality. The proposal would be called the Economic Justice Act.
The money would be spent over 5 years, and a large chunk of it would come from unspent CARES act money. President Trump signed that $2 Trillion dollar act into law already. Another question that many may raise is would this be a one-time thing, or open up a Pandora’s box to Democrats demanding more and more programs similar to this one? Time will tell. CNBC also noted:
Here are some of the key points of the legislation:
- $115 billion toward a down payment on modern building infrastructure, including high-speed internet, affordable housing and public schools.
- $50 billion to ensure working families have access to child care during the pandemic.
- A $40 billion investment in health care providers to increase access in communities of color.
- $40 billion towards a new homeowner down payment tax credit for up to $15,000 per family to expand access to homeownership.
- A $24 billion investment to connect workers to federal jobs and hiring programs.
- A $20 billion investment into capital and small business support in communities of color.
- $15 billion to expand Medicaid coverage.
Many will surely praise the proposal. Others have and will call it ‘Democrat vote-buying’, like this person:
