Secretary Pompeo Praises ‘Truly great work by the US Government’ to Bring American Citizens Abroad Home

The State Department has repatriated more than 45,000 Americans from around the world as of yesterday morning, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced.

In remarks at the State Department, the Pompeo hailed the effort, which comes as the Coronavirus pandemic has grounded commercial flights and shuttered borders.

“Nearly every day, incredible stories of our teams’ speed and tenacity getting our people home hit my desk,” Pompeo said. “These stories could be pulled from a Hollywood script. They’re remarkable.”

According to data from the State Department posted Monday afternoon, 374 flights from more than 75 countries had been completed since the end of January.

Pompeo took to Twitter last night to say he was “amazed at the level of logistics and detail that goes into” the repatriation operations. He continued “it’s truly great work by the U.S. Government on behalf of the American people.”

Amazed at the level of logistics and detail that goes into every one of our repatriation operations. Our @StateDept team is working with @DHSgov, @DeptofDefense, and our foreign partners to coordinate transport authorities, airlines and medical companies to bring #AmericansHome.

Our teams are printing emergency passports to get these folks back. We call hotels, make arrangements for flight crews, and provide letters for safe passage. The list goes on and on. It’s truly great work by the U.S. Government on behalf of the American people. #AmericansHome

This morning, he tweeted about Americans who were brought back from Nambia, a country in southwest Africa. He thanked the Embassy there for their “efforts” and “staff across the world” for working “tirelessly”.

Well done, @USEmbNamibia! Appreciate all your efforts to help our fellow Americans return to the United States. Our staff across the world continues to work tirelessly to bring #AmericansHome.
