U.S. Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) was censured by the North Carolina Republican party today for his vote to impeach former President Donald Trump. Burr was one of seven who turned their back on Trump when he was at his darkest hour and facing a second impeachment within the U.S. Senate.
Now, Burr is responding as if he is somehow surprised about what has happened to him and is angry at his own party. Clearly the GOP in North Carolina in expressing an extension of how the voters in the state of North Carolina feel, and in our view, it’s not just a few rogue actors within the state leadership. Nevertheless, he had this to say in part as you can see below:
“UPDATE: Burr responds to censure: “It is truly a sad day for North Carolina Republicans. My party’s leadership has chosen loyalty to one man over the core principles of the Republican Party and the founders of our great nation.””

Earlier we reported in part:
North Carolina’s Republican Party voted to censure U.S. Sen Richard Burr tonight in an emergency vote via Zoom, two days after the Senator cast a “guilty” vote in former President Trump’s second impeachment trial.
Burr, who is in his third term and last term in the Senate, was one of seven Republican senators to vote guilty in Trump’s impeachment for inciting an insurrection related to the deadly Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol.
The vote by Burr was immediately met with condemnation Saturday from several North Carolina Republicans, including the chairman of the NC GOP and a candidate running for Burr’s seat in 2022 and the Wake County Republicans also issued an official censure on Monday.
Former U.S. House Rep Mark Walker is already a declared candidate and he called Burr’s vote “wrong.” In a fundraising appeal posted after the vote, Walker said that he’d be a “true conservative champion.”
In a tweet on Saturday, Walker praised one of Trump’s defense attorney’s when he exclaimed, “Michael Van Der Veen is on fire!”
The Hill reported in part:
The North Carolina Republican Party’s central committee voted unanimously on Monday to censure Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) over his vote on Saturday to convict former President Trump.
The committee announced the censure in a statement that argued Burr’s vote to convict went outside the authority of the Constitution.
“Tonight, the North Carolina Republican Party Central Committee (NCGOP) voted unanimously to censure Senator Richard Burr for his vote to convict former President Trump in the impeachment trial which he declared to be unconstitutional,” the committee said in a statement, adding that “the Democrat-led attempt to impeach a former President lies outside the United States Constitution.”
“Now that the Senate has voted to acquit President Trump, we hope that Democrats will set aside their divisive partisan agenda and focus on the American priorities of tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, safely reopening schools and restarting the economy,” it concluded.
We will update you on if there is further action against Burr or others in this developing situation.
