Sharpton Takes Indirect Swipe at Trump During George Floyd Eulogy: ‘We Cannot Use Bibles as a Prop’

A memorial was held today for George Floyd and the Rev. Al Sharpton was tapped to deliver the eulogy. He used the platform to talk about a number of different subjects and one was to criticize President Trump indirectly for his symbolic walk to the St. John’s Church earlier this week.

Sharpton claimed that “first of all, we cannot use Bibles as a prop. For those of have agendas that aren’t about justice – this family will not let you use George as a prop.”

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany defended the move at a briefing, comparing Trump’s walk to the church to other iconic moments in political history. “Like Churchill, we saw him inspecting the bombing damage. It sent a powerful message of leadership to the British people. And George W. Bush, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch after 9/11.”

“It was powerful and important to send a message that the rioters, the looters, the anarchists, they will not prevail — that burning churches are not what America is about,” she added.

Sharpton also had more to say about it.

From the US Liberty Wire:

“Let me ask those of you that in the traditions of eulogies need a scriptural reference. Go to Ecclesiastes, third chapter,” Sharpton said.

“First verse says ‘to everything there is a time and a purpose and season under the Heavens.’ I’m going to leave it there.”

“I saw somebody standing in front of a church the other day which had been boarded up as a result of violence, held a Bible in his hand. I’ve been preaching since I was a little boy, I’ve never seen anyone hold a Bible like that, but I’ll leave that alone.”

“But since he held the Bible, if he’s watching us today, I would like him to open that Bible.” The crowd then applauded as Sharpton added “And I’d like him to read Ecclesiastes 3.”

‘To every season there’s a time and a purpose.’ And I think that it is our job to let the world know when we see what is going on in the streets of this country and in Europe, around the world, that you need to know what time it is.”
