US Senator Ted Cruz announced this morning that he had sent a letter to US Attorney General Bill Barr calling for an investigation after uproar over a recent film release that many believe promotes child pornography.

Cruz tweeted about the letter, “Following Netflix’s disturbing promotion of ‘Cuties,’ I sent a letter calling on The Justice Dept to investigate whether Netflix, its executives, or the filmmakers violated any federal laws against the production and distribution of child pornography.”

Cruz wrote in the letter that “The film routinely fetishizes and sexualizes these pre-adolescent girls as they perform dances simulating sexual conduct in revealing clothing, including at least one scene with partial child nudity.”
“These scenes in and of themselves are harmful. And it is likely that the filming of this movie created even more explicit and abusive scenes, and that pedophiles across the world in the future will manipulate and imitate this film in abusive ways,” he continued.
He then told Barr that, “As you know, the Department of Justice has a significant role in preventing the sexual abuse of children. The department enforces federal criminal law making it a serious crime to produce or distribute material involving the sexual exploitation of minors, including the filming of minors engaging in sexual explicit conduct.”
Cruz started off the final paragraph by saying, “Although the First Amendment provides vigorous protection for artistic expression. it does not allow individuals or for-profit corporations to produce or distribute child pornography.”
Columnist Mark Harris retweeted the letter and claimed that this was all part of a big QAnon conspiracy. “Ted Cruz doesn’t give a damn about child porn (or porn, or children). He and other politicians who are jumping on this ugly lie are doing it for one reason: They need ways to wink to QAnon without being too explicit,” he said.
Cruz retweeted that response, asking “Why are supposedly “mainstream” journalists going out of their way to defend child porn?” Cruz also brought up his history as an attorney, saying “Before I was in the Senate, I argued numerous cases going after pedophiles, and child pornography has real victims. It destroys lives. And it is a federal felony.”
