‘They’re Not After Me, They’re After You’ Meme Posted by Trump Removed by Twitter After Copyright Claim

A meme that was posted yesterday by President Trump on both Twitter and Facebook has been removed today by Twitter due to a copyright claim by the New York Times.

The meme, which is still up on Facebook with nearly 500k likes/reacts, shows a picture taken by Damon Winter, a photographer for The New York Times, that was taken to accompany a feature it wrote on then candidate Donald Trump in 2015.

The wording on the meme appears to speak to Trump’s voters and base, by saying, “In reality, they’re not after me, they’re after you. I’m just in the way.” The Tweet has nearly 330k likes and a little over 100k retweets.

From Axios:

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed that the tweet in question had been actioned due to a DMCA complaint from a rights holder. A Times spokesperson confirmed that it filed the take-down notice and that Twitter took action.

The copyright complaint was posted to the Lumen Database, a database that gathers legal complaints and requests for removal of online material.

Twitter notes in its copyright policy that it responds to valid copyright complaints sent to it by a copyright owner or their authorized representatives.

Twitter regularly shares the total number of DMCA takedown notices and counter-notices it receives for Twitter and Twitter-owned Periscope content.
