Deputy White House Counsel Patrick Philbin took his turn today to present information to the Senate to show why the impeachment should be thrown out. Philbin has consistently said the impeachment inquiry was unauthorized and unconstitutional. He has also been relatively untheatrical in his presentations, however, he couldn’t hold back grinning, and it appears that he held back laughter at an old video of Nadler he used to bolster the case against impeachment.
The video of Nadler highlights Nadler’s position on impeachment during the Clinton proceedings. In the video, Nadler says “There must never be a narrowly-voted impeachment or an impeachment substantially supported by one of our major political parties and largely opposed by the other. Such an impeachment would lack legitimacy.” After the video plays you can see the smile on Philbin’s face. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi iterated the same sentiment before the house voted on impeachment. See video below:
Today is the second day that Trump’s legal team has had to present their arguments to the Senate. So far it seems they are trying to poke holes in the arguments presented by the House Impeachment Managers, targeting House intelligence chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) and House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY). Both played big roles in the House impeachment and are now part of the House Impeachment Managers team.
Ken Starr presented today a history on impeachment. Starr led the investigation into Clinton, which lead to Clinton’s impeachment in 1998. Since Clinton’s impeachment it Starr says that we are in the ‘age of impeachment’ that impeachment has been decried for each of the presidents since Clinton. Starr issued a warning to the Democrats saying “Democrats will regret it when Republicans are handing out the pens, the pens of the signing ceremony” See in the video below at the end:
After arguments wrap up this week the Senate may vote on the tabled issues that were raised on the first day of the trial. The Senate impeachment is anticipated to wrap up with in the next two weeks. Many Republicans are saying the president is likely to be acquitted. There is still more left to hear from Trump’s legal team.
