Sunday evening, two teens were shot outside of Republican Gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Congressman Lee Zeldin’s home while his twin daughters were home.
The shooting appears to have nothing to do with the Zeldins, other than it took place in their front yard. Two 17-year-olds, Joel Murphy and Elijah Robinson were both shot.
New York Post reported that “Investigators are looking into whether a Saturday night feud at a Suffolk County recording studio may be connected to Sunday’s shooting.” They also reported that the pair are “known to the department.”
Zeldin’s 16-year-old twins, Mikayla and Arianna, were at home doing homework when the shooting occurred. They then locked themselves in a bathroom inside the home.
Zeldin is running on running on a tough-on-crime platform. after the shooting, he said, “I’m standing in front of crime scene tape in front of my own house. You can’t get me more outraged than I am right now.”
He shared a statement on social media after the incident which can be seen below:
This morning, Zeldin gave an interview on Fox News sharing, “It really freaked them [his daughters] out. This is something where you had two people who got shot who are essentially lying down about 10 feet from where they were doing homework.”
“One of the bullets landed about 30 feet from where the girls were doing homework.”
“When we were getting back to the house, I mean, we had to go through crime scene tape, we’re getting advised where to walk so that we were stepping on blood. This is not something that we were planning to return home to when we left for a Columbus Day parade.”
He also shared, “One was lying down underneath our porch or was lying down under a bush in front of our porch just a couple feet away. The third person who wasn’t shot was moving all around the property up and down the porch.”
The police are investigating it as possibly gang-related. “It could be gang-related but that doesn’t make you feel any better. I mean, that’s the problem with Chicago right now. It’s a complete disaster,” said about that revelation.
You can see his full interview on Fox News below:
While the violence was reportedly not directly related, it’s eery that Zeldin was recently attacked by a violent Democrat at a campaign event.
