President Donald J. Trump has been acquitted of both articles of impeachment. The U.S. Senate voted this afternoon and the Democrats have failed in their latest attempt to have the president removed from office.
The impeachment inquiry was rushed through the House. Democrats decided to vote on impeachment as soon as they felt they had enough support to get it passed in the House. Upon passing the two partisan articles of impeachment, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) decided she would hold on to the articles of impeachment to try to manipulate the Senate into agreeing to her terms, or at least this is how many Republicans perceived it. This failed though, and as soon as Pelosi received backlash from Senators in her own party or possibly, it was then that her impeachment pens came in. Pelosi decided to sign the articles and sent them to the Senate.
In the Senate, the House managers fought for witnesses that they failed to successfully litigate for in the House. A vote was held on January 31st and it was decided that no witnesses would be called in the Senate. The closing articles were presented to the Senate Monday the 3rd of February. Senators had Tuesday and Today to speak on the floor about their vote.
The vote was held this afternoon on both articles, on the first article of impeachment the vote was 48 yeas and 52 nays. In the second article of impeachment, the vote was 47 yeas and 53 nays. House minority leader McCarthy said earlier today that Trump would be ‘acquitted for life’. This statement was a slight at Nancy Pelosi who said that Trump was ‘impeached for life’ when making remarks after the House impeachment vote.
Trump’s response to the Senate vote came in a tweet. “I will be making a public statement tomorrow at 12:00pm from the @WhiteHouse to discuss our Country’s VICTORY on the Impeachment Hoax!”
