U.S. House Rep Bob Good (R-VA) delivered a passionate House floor speech in opposition of the “Respect for Marriage Act” prior to its passage yesterday.
Good said that the bill should instead be called the “disrespect for marriage act” in his view. “This bill certainly disrespects God’s definition of marriage, a definition that has served his creation well for more than 5000 years of recorded history and his definition is the only one that really matters,” Good explained.
“This bill would codify into federal law the Supreme Court’s wrongly decided Overfell decision and ensure that the marriage laws in the most liberal state, irrespective of how radical they might become in the future – think polygamy, beastiality, child marriage or whatever – must be legally recognized in all states,” Good pointed out.
Good insisted that “Almost everything that plagues our society is a failure to follow God’s design for marriage, morality, and the family. The perfect, omniscient, immutable God knows what he’s doing.”
Additionally, Good noted that the IRS could go after religious organizations if the bill ends up being signed into law.
“This proposal is yet another Democrat attempt to undermine our values which formed our nation and continue to hold our country together,” Good declared.
Good urged all Republicans specifically to oppose the bill, however, 39 ultimately joined with the Democrats to help solidify its passage.
The House vote was 258 to 169 and loud applause broke out in the chamber when the vote was gaveled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to a close.
Good is one of a handful of Republicans that is leading the charge to prevent current GOP House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy from becoming the Speaker of the next Congress.
