Joe Biden insisted on Friday that only “better mind-readers” could have effectively dealt with a nationwide shortage of baby formula.
U.S. House Rep Jody Hice (R-GA), who is challenging Brad Raffensperger for Secretary of State, took exception to Biden’s suggestion and mocked him in a tweet today.
The Biden administration, however, has failed to provide any details about what specific changes would take place, an estimate of how long it would take for the crisis to pass, or even when Biden was first briefed about the shortfall.
At a Rose Garden event where Biden urged cities to spend COVID-19 stimulus funds on cops, CNN reporter Jeremy Diamond told him, “Republicans have said that your administration should have anticipated this baby formula shortage.”
“Are you satisfied with your administration’s response so far? And some of the steps that you and your administration are taking now, including loosening these import requirements next week, could you have taken those steps sooner, before parents got to these shelves and couldn’t find formula?” Diamond asked
“If we’d been better mind-readers I guess we could have, but we moved as quickly as it probably came apparent to us and we have to move with caution as well as speed because we got to make sure what we’re getting is, in fact, first-rate product,” Biden shot back.
Biden added, “That’s why the FDA has to go through the process.”
The New York Post noted that for weeks, parents complained on social media about difficulty finding formula, but the crisis gained national coverage this week as congressional Republicans blasted Biden.
Hice shared a clip of part of Biden’s response in a tweet and said, “Biden claims he must be a ‘mind reader’ to see shortages.”
“When it comes to reading his mind, it’s a short read! We need thoughtful leadership!” Hice declared.
